Abu Dhabi – June 7, 2015 – After strengthening their provisional 2nd position in the overall standings of the manufacturers championship in Portugal, Citroën Total Abu Dhabi World Rally Team heads to Italy to compete for the title of Rally Italia Sardegna (11 to 14 June) – Round 6 of FIA World Rally Championship. The team is competing in three DS 3 WRCs led by Kris Meeke/Paul Nagle, Mads Østberg/Jonas Andersson and UAE champion Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi / Chris Patterson. In last year’s edition Sheikh Khalid finished 9th in the WRC category and won the longest jump award.
Also last year, Citroën Total Abu Dhabi WRT driver Mads Østberg finished in second place behind Frenchman, Sebastien Ogier and ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala from team Volkswagen. Rally Sardegna features the longest stage in this year’s championship, the Monte Lerno stage, known as “the trap” which features the hair-raising “Micky’s Jump”.
Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi said: “There doesn’t appear to be much difference between this years’ Rally compared to last; most of the stages are the same so we will benefit from last years’ experience, especially on the Monte Lerno stage. Rally Sardegna is one of the team’s favorites but there is very little margin for error, it is made up of fast and narrow roads with bushes and rocks on the edges which usually causes some retirements. I believe Rally Sardegna is a great opportunity for the team to win a large number of points towards the championship.”
Rally Italia Sardegna consists of 24 special stages, totaling 402.88 km and road section stages of 1,162.82 km with the town of Alghero playing host to the service park. The Rally kicks off in Cagliari on Thursday, June 11 with 2.50 kilometer Super Special Stage. Day 2 (Friday, June 12) consists of nine stages totaling 142.40 kilometer. Day 3 (Saturday, June 13) consists of ten marathon stages totaling 212.58 km, including “Monte Lerno”, a 42.20 km stage. The Final day, (Sunday, June 14) consists of four stages totaling 45.40 km length.
